What To Do About Smelly Drains

There are a number of reasons your drains may smell. For example, if your shower drain is the culprit, the smell could be caused by stray hairs and other debris getting mixed in with soap scum to create a clog. Or, if the smell is coming from your kitchen sink, the offending smell could be due to decomposing food stuck in your garbage disposal. Whatever the cause, bad odors permeating through your home affect the overall atmosphere. So, what can you do about it?

Flush the Drain

Very carefully, pour a couple quarts of boiling water down the drain. Wait about 5 minutes, and then pour an equal amount of cold water down the drain to force any remaining grease or clog to congeal. Then repeat the boiling water flush. You’ll want to have a plunger available just in case the last bit of congealed substance doesn’t quite make it out.

Try Vinegar

Boil 4 cups of vinegar. Pour half of it down the drain, rinse with cold water, and then pour the second half of the hot vinegar. This typically powers through any small clogs in the drain, which is usually the source of offending smells.

Use Baking Soda

For really stubborn smells, try running hot water down the drain and follow it up with a cup of baking soda. Then, pour two cups of hot vinegar down the drain. This will create some fizzing action, so don’t be alarmed. Wait about 30 minutes after this process and then flush the drain with boiling water.

Try Citrus Peels

The above mentioned steps apply to kitchen or bathroom drains, but if we’re talking about a kitchen drain with a garbage disposal, citrus peels may be your answer! Do slice the peels up to avoid jamming your disposal. Then simply run your garbage disposal with citrus peels, and you may be able to get rid of the foul smell. Additionally, this will help to remove greasy buildup that could have contributed to the smell in the first place.
