Septic Tank Certification
Septic tanks are critically important parts of smoothly operating plumbing and waste removal systems for homes not connected to the city sewer system. Without a good septic tank, you’d have no way to dispose of waste and keep your home safe and sanitary. That’s why it’s highly recommended that you have the septic tank certified by a state licensed inspector before buying or renting a home. If selling, inspection is also recommended to alleviate any concerns from prospective buyers.
If you need a qualified septic tank inspector and you live in the San Gabriel Valley area, call Ace Pelizon Plumbing today. We provide a full range of septic inspection and cleaning services and will ensure your system is safe and operates as it was designed to for years to come.
Septic Tank Inspection
Routine septic maintenance and inspections should be performed every 2–3 years. During a routine inspection, a septic expert will check for various problems such as clogged drains or solid build up. However, a septic certification is a much more advanced inspection designed to ensure the tank is not only operational, but in good working condition for the new owner or tenant.
During a full septic tank inspection, the following tasks are performed on the tank:
- Dye Test – Fluorescent dye is placed in the septic system. If that dye appears on the drainage field surface, there is some level of failure in the septic system that requires further investigation.
- Open Pit Test – This test is more expensive than others, but it’s an important way to ensure the septic tank is in good condition. During this test, the tank will be pumped clean and the dirt will be removed to open the tank. Cameras and mirrors are then lowered into the tank to check it carefully.
- Code Requirements – Building and sanitation codes change, but always for good reason. If a septic system isn’t up to code, your inspector will make a note of it and provide clear directions for what changes need to be made.
Septic Tank Inspectors
During certification, the inspector will consider a number of other factors to determine if the septic tank is in good working order or if it is failing or about to start failing. Keep in mind that most systems last up to 25 years, so if it is approaching that age, it may need replacement soon. The quality of maintenance performed over the years will have an impact on the life of the system and the water capacity will be measured to determine if the current tank is enough for the amount of water your family uses. Additions to a home are often built without upgrading the septic system, which can result in failure.
If the inspector determines that the septic tank is in good working order, is large enough for the water needs of the house, and is not about to fail due to age or poor maintenance, it is certified in writing.
The importance of septic tank certification cannot be overstated. Your family will rely on that tank for years to come to provide waste disposal. Even a hint of impending septic tank failure should be taken very seriously, especially if you’re about to buy or rent a new home.
