Attic Fans

Most people rarely enter the attics in their homes, especially in the summer, but we all know it gets hot up there. It gets so hot in fact, that it may be costing you money to keep the rest of your house cool. Attic temperatures in the summer can reach as high as 130 degrees F, due in large part to common roof materials like asphalt shingle that conduct a lot of heat. That heat has nowhere to go but into your attic, and because of the insulation you’ve installed to retain winter heat, that warm air stays put.

That’s why attic fans have become such a popular way to reduce the cost of air conditioning in the summer. They equalize the temperature in the attic and reduce the amount of cooling needed to keep your home comfortable. If you want to learn more about these incredibly simple but effective devices, call Ace Pelizon Plumbing today. Our San Gabriel Valley area attic fan technicians have years of experience installing, maintaining and servicing attic home attic fans.

How Attic Fans Work

Attic fans are very simple devices. They are installed in the roof of your house and are usually attached to a thermostat. When the thermostat reaches a certain temperature (usually 90 degrees or so) the fan turns on. Because of the conductive properties of your roof, the temperature inside will quickly rise above the temperature outside, especially when the sun is shining. If it’s 70 degrees and sunny outside, it can quickly reach 90 degrees inside the attic.

When the attic fan switches on, air equalizes between the inside and outside of your attic. In the process, your attic slowly lowers in temperature until it is the same as outside. Therefore, the attic temperature won’t reach the highs it would without a fan.

Lower Cooling Costs

Why is this helpful in lowering your home’s cooling costs? When your attic is 130 degrees, that heat will slowly but surely radiate into the rest of your home, forcing your air conditioner to work harder just to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. However, with an attic fan, the air conditioner can work on cooling the rooms it is designed to cool, and not the additional heat coming from your attic.

These small and very affordable devices can have a surprisingly large impact on the summer time cost of cooling. If you’re interested in cutting the cost of your air conditioning, call Ace Pelizon and learn more about attic fan installation services we offer to customers in the Los Angeles County area.
