Fix-it Tips!

Ace Pelizon Plumbing is your best call for any plumbing or electrical emergency that may arise. But if you’re in a pinch and need a fix before we can get to you, here are some quick Fix-it Tips that may keep your head above water...

WATER PIPE LEAKS:
1)
If the leak is at a supply line; washing machine hose; Dishwasher supply tubing, or ice maker tubing then shut off the water at the emergency shut off valve (aka angle (fixture) below, behind or near the fixture-see photos
2)   If the leak is in a pipe, or is from an unknown source, or if the above mentioned shut-off valves do not shut off the water supply then locate the main water shut off valve usually located near the front, exterior of your home-see photos. Turn this valve to the off position. If it is a newer style “ball-valve”; then turn the valve a quarter-turn so that the handle is perpendicular to the valve body-this is the off position on most ball-valves. If the valve is an older style “gate valve”; then turn the valve clockwise until it stops-this should shut off all of the water supply to the house.
3)    If the leak is coming out of the ground in the front yard area, or if any of the above actions do not adequately stop the flow of pressurized water from a leaking pipe, supply line or fixture then you must shut-off the water at the water meter usually located in a concrete vault near the front curb of your home. Whenever possible, Call your local water department first to request an emergency shut-off of your home’s water supply-it is against the law in some areas for a homeowner to shut-off the water supply at the meter valve. When initially opening the concrete water meter vault-Be Careful as spiders often make their homes in these location. Place your meter-key over the meter shut off valve, and turn the meter key clockwise until it is either perpendicular to the incoming pipe-or in some situations until it stops. In some cases, two adjustable (crescent) wrenches may be use in place of a meter key-see photos

WATER HEATERS - EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN INSTRUCTIONS
1)
First-Whenever possible take measures to protect your home and other property by redirecting the leaking water-or by absorbing the water using towels, shop vacuums or other methods.
2)   If your water heater has a circulating pump-it must be turned off, unplugged or otherwise shut down prior to shutting off the water supply and draining down the water heater-Failure to do so may damage the circulating pump.
3)   Turn the main water heater gas control valve; usually located at the front (bottom) of the tank to the off position.
4)   Shut off the gas supply valve, which is usually located near the water heater-turn the valve to the off position so that the valve handle is perpendicular to the valve body-the gas supply should now be off. See photos. If the tank is an electric water heater then locate the circuit breaker that is supplying the water heater and “flip-it” to the OFF position. It is imperative that the gas or electricity supplying the water heater be turned OFF prior to draining down the tank-Failure to properly isolate the “fuel” supply to the water heater PRIOR to draining down the tank can cause damage to the tank-AND CAUSE A DANGEROUS CONDITION THAT COULD RESULT IN PROPERTY DAMAGE AND PERSONAL INJURY.
5)   Turn off the water supply valve located above the water heater. If it is a newer style “ball-valve”; then turn the valve a quarter-turn so that the handle is perpendicular to the valve body-this is the off position on most ball-valves. If the valve is an older style “gate valve”; then turn the valve clockwise until it stops-this should shut off the water supply to the water heater. See photos.
6)   Attach a garden hose to the drain valve located near the bottom (front) of most water heaters. This drain valve will have hose threads so that your garden hose can be easily attached. Direct the discharge end of the garden hose to a location safely able to handle the tank drainage. After the hose is properly attached open the drain valve and open (turn-on) a hot water faucet in your home-this will allow the tank to drain down through the hose. Make sure you check your hose for leaks.

DRAIN LEAKS UNDER A SINK:
1)
As a temporary “stop-gap” repair-Common electricians tape can be wrapped in a tight overlapping pattern around leaking pipes or pipe joints to stop drain leaks under a kitchen, bathroom, or utility leak. This should stop a simple drain leak until it can be properly repaired.

SEWER STOPPAGES:
1)
Sewer stoppages cannot normally be cleared without the use of professional equipment. However, you can sometimes alleviate backed up water in bathtubs, showers, etc. by opening the cleanout access; usually located at the front of the house-or anywhere else along the outside perimeter of the house. Opening this cleanout access should allow the backed up water to “relieve” itself on the ground outside of the house. This will not “fix” the stoppage, but it can prevent water damage to the interior of the house until a plumber can unclog the sewer line.

TRIPPING CIRCUIT BREAKERS
1)
Ace Pelizon Plumbing and Electric does not recommend repeated resetting of circuit breakers. If the circuit breakers in your electrical panel are continually “tripping” an electrical contractor should be consulted immediately to determine if a dangerous overload condition exists.
2)   CALL ACE PELIZON NOW AT 626-331-0701 FOR ELECTRICAL SERVICE.
