Bursting Pipes: What Can You Do?

A burst pipe can be a nightmare for homeowners new and old. As water begins to flood a portion of your home, you’ll have to act fast to stop the damage from becoming any worse. What can you do?

Shut Off the Water

Every homeowner should know the location of their water shutoff valves. Most homes built today have both a main shutoff valve and individual fixture shutoff valves. If there is a leak from a water heater or a toilet, you can stop it by turning the valve located nearby these fixtures. But for many burst pipes, you’ll have to look around for a main shutoff valve. In cold climates, the meter is usually in the basement, and you’ll find a valve right before the meter than you have to make several full turns to shut off. In places with mild temperatures, you can find the water main outside of the home.

Clean Up the Area

Don’t wait too long to begin cleaning up the mess. The water damage could not only ruin carpets and flooring; it can also lead to mold development. Be sure to dry as much of the area as you can ASAP. If the leak has gone undetected for a long time, you should look into having the home inspected for mold.

Call a Plumber

The most important thing you can do is to locate a plumber who is available to make the repair. Many plumbers offer 24-hour emergency repair services. You should also look into scheduling preventive services so that the problem is unlikely to occur again or detect issues early on. Regular plumbing inspections can give you a good indication of the condition of your pipes. You might also want to install an automatic shutoff valve, which will automatically shut off the water after a pipe bursts.
