Most homeowners don't think about their pipes until something goes wrong. But by the time a pipe fails visibly, the problem has often been developing for years. Here are five signs your home's plumbing may be due for a repipe.
1. Low or Inconsistent Water Pressure
If water pressure is dropping at your fixtures — especially when multiple are running at once — corroded or scaled-up pipes are a common cause. As galvanized steel pipes age, the inside corrodes and narrows, restricting flow. A repipe restores full pressure throughout the house.
2. Rusty or Discolored Water
Brown, yellow, or reddish water from your taps is a clear sign of pipe corrosion. If you're seeing it from cold taps too, your supply pipes are corroding from the inside out. This is a health concern, not just an aesthetic one.
3. Frequent Leaks
One leak can be a fluke. Two or three in different locations in the same year is a pattern. When pipes start failing in one place, the whole system is usually at the same age and condition — more failures are coming.
4. Pipes Are 50+ Years Old
Galvanized steel pipes common in homes built before 1970 have a lifespan of around 40–70 years. If your pipes are original to a home built in the 1950s or 60s, they're living on borrowed time.
5. You're Renovating Anyway
If you're opening walls for a kitchen or bathroom remodel, it's the perfect time to replace the pipes behind them. The incremental cost is much lower when the walls are already open.
