Plumbing FAQ 14: What Is Reverse Osmosis?

Are you frustrated by your tap water supply or concerned about contamination? The quality of the water in your home is critical to your health and that of your family. It can even affect your plumbing. Depending on what type of contaminant or pollutant you are targeting, there is a diverse range of water treatment systems on the market today. One of the most comprehensive and popular is known as a reverse osmosis system. These can be integrated under the sink or at your water supply for whole-house coverage. Make sure you hire a professional plumber to take care of your water treatment system installation service. Ace Pelizon is the Glendora plumbing company to call to find out more about installing a reverse osmosis system in your home.

In any given container, water will seek equilibrium. Osmosis is the diffusion process whereby molecules of water move from an area of higher concentration into an area of lower concentration. A semipermeable membrane allows for pure water to pass through, but not trace minerals or other microorganisms like bacteria. Because water seeks equilibrium, this diffusion process continues until the concentrations are equal. In reverse osmosis, this process is reversed by applying pressure to one side of the membrane in order to purify the water molecules. Instead of seeking equilibrium, a reverse osmosis water treatment system seeks to purify the incoming water supply.

A water treatment system is a great way to ensure that your home water supply is purified and free of contaminants and foul tastes. There are a number of systems available, depending on what you would like to remove from your water supply. Beyond reverse osmosis, there are also water filters and UV water disinfecting systems. The first step to pure water begins with a water test, however, so that we can assess what exactly seems to be the problem with your water. If you’re at all concerned about the quality of the water in your home, particularly if it has changed recently, then make sure you look for a professional plumber.
