Why Am I Losing Hot Water?
Not getting enough hot water from your shower or kitchen sink? There are a few different possibilities for this all-too-common water heater issue.
- Inadequate sizing – Your tank may not be large enough to handle the hot water needs of your family members.
- Broken dip tube – A plastic tube directs cold water entering the tank to the bottom, so hot water can rise easily and head out to your faucets. But this tube could break or deteriorate and require replacement.

What Should I Know about Different Types of Water Heaters?
You don’t have to go with the standard tank water heater when replacing an old unit! You can upgrade to a tankless water heater in most cases, which requires less energy because it does not require that water is heated throughout the day. However, a tankless water heater does cost more. The energy savings can offset the price, but some people prefer to keep a tank water heater for the low initial price.
How Will I Know When My Water Heater Needs Replacement?
Most water heaters do not live much longer than about 15 years. You may be able to prolong its lifespan with proper maintenance, but it’s best to replace it as early as possible to avoid significant leaks and sudden system breakdowns.
Any signs of rust or corrosion (rust flakes in the water, a worn tank) mean you may need to replace it. Otherwise, consult with a technician to see if it can be repaired.
