How To Keep Drains Clean And Clear

Still noticing problems with your drains after an otherwise successful Thanksgiving Day feast? We’re here to help. We’ve compiled some advice on what to do to solve common drain problems—and when it’s better to call in a professional.

Smells from the drains

If you’re worried about foul odors coming from your drains, there could be an easy fix. In a drain that has not been used in a long time, try simply turning on the water. It could be that the P-trap that stops sewer odors from coming through the drain simply dried out.

If this isn’t the case, try using a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to clear your drains. We recommend one part baking soda to every two parts vinegar (perhaps about ½ cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar). Pour in the baking soda first, follow it up with the vinegar, and let it work its magic. If not, there could be a larger issue with your sewer line instead.

Minor clogs

For smaller clogs in your sink, we always recommend starting with a plunger. Make sure your plunger is designed for sinks, as some toilet plungers are shaped differently for use in an irregularly shaped drain. If a vigorous plunging doesn’t work for a sink with a double bowl, you may want to try this method for more effective use. Stuff a rag in the second drain opening to get more pressure going on the other side.

If plunging doesn’t seem to do the trick, you should leave the job to professionals before the blockage has time to worsen. You could purchase a drain auger for at-home use, but this could damage the drains (or become stuck!) if not properly used. Professional plumbers have the proper tools and inspection equipment to tackle any size clog.
