A Guide To Fixing Leaks Throughout Your Plumbing System

All across the state, California residents have been making efforts to reduce their water usage. But some steps are more difficult than others, and finding and fixing leaks around your property is not as easy as, say, turning off the water as you brush your teeth.

We’ve got a few tips for you, so that you can learn to detect leaks in your plumbing system and know what to do if you spot them.

In Your Toilet

Testing a toilet for leaks between the bowl and the tank can help you to save a lot of water. A plumber can help you with this task. A few dye tablets go into the tank, and then you simply wait 15-20 minutes. If the dye appears in the bowl, you have a leak. You’ll likely need the flush valve assembly replaced.

From Sinks and Faucets

You shouldn’t ignore leaks from your faucets. A sink dripping at a rate of just one drip per every second can still waste around 3,000 gallons of water per year. We don’t recommend DIY repairs either, as you don’t want to make the problem any worse, so call a local plumber instead. However, if you do decide to attempt to fix a small leak on your own, be sure to turn off the water supply first!

From a Water Heater

When there is leaking from your water heater, make sure that you know the location of the shutoff valve (typically right above the water heater). However, avoid stepping on any of the hot water, as this can be dangerous. If you cannot get to the shut off valve safely, you may have to shut off the water main. Then, call a plumber ASAP!

In Your Pipes

Spotting leaks within your pipes is difficult, especially since you cannot simply peer inside the pipes and see the problem. Instead, look for a drop in water pressure, the sound of rushing water, dark spots on walls and ceilings, water around the perimeter of the home, or even patches of grass that seem to grow quickly. Pay close attention to potential leaks after an earthquake!
