El Niño And Storm Drain Preparation

It’s no secret that El Niño has arrived. There may be plenty more storms ahead, and even bigger ones, but California homes and neighborhoods aren’t always prepared for all of the rain. Take the proper steps now to prevent flooding later!

Clean out gutters and downspouts

Cleaning out the gutters and downspouts on your home helps to keep rainwater from backing up and make sure it drains in the proper direction. You can use your garden hose to make sure water is draining correctly.

Check storm drainage on your property

This is especially important if you’ve made any changes to your landscaping recently. You’ll want to check to make sure that the slope of your property moves water into the drains. You should also check to make sure water moves away from decks and balconies.

City storm drains

Blockage in city storm drains can also contribute to flooding on your property. If you notice a blocked storm drain, report it to local officials. You should not lift up a grate on your own, as this could be dangerous.

Other ways to prepare

If you’re worried that your home may flood regardless of how you prepare (or if you’ve experienced flooding in the past) you may want to take some additional measures to protect yourself, your family, and your home.

  • Installing a sump pump to move water out of the lowest point of your home.
  • Preparing your home with sandbags to help move water away from the home, especially if you’ve had flooding problems in the past.
  • Turning off your sprinklers.
  • Reinforcing fencing.
  • Considering flood insurance.
  • Fixing leaks around the home.
