DIY Plumbing Projects & When To Call A Plumber

Do-it-yourselfers get a lot of extra help these days, with plenty of DIY projects on sites like Pinterest that help you save money on labor and products. It’s excellent that DIY tutorials have helped so many people discover new hobbies, perfect their interests, and save some money.

But that doesn’t mean that everything you need to be done around the house should be done with the help of an online guide. While we support those who build and create, our expert plumbers know that DIY plumbing jobs can go very wrong.

Plumbing Projects You May Be Able to Take on Yourself

Some plumbing projects are often perfectly reasonable for a homeowner to take on without the help of a plumbing professional. Still, if the problem is too difficult to solve with these methods, you should consult with a plumbing professional.

  • Resetting a broken garbage disposal. Pressing the button underneath the sink is often all you need to do.
  • Unclogging a toilet. Invest in a really good toilet plunger with an extra attachment on the bottom to help seal around the drain opening. Put as much effort into pulling up on the plunger as pushing down, maintaining the seal and pressure.
  • Cleaning drains. For smelly drains and minor drain opening clogs, a bit of baking soda followed by vinegar may help. For larger clogs, however, you’ll need a plumber’s help.
  • Addressing low water pressure in a sink or shower. Often, you just need to clean the aerator. Typically, you can unscrew the end of the faucet or part of the shower head, remove the aerator (a small screen) and rinse it off if a small sediment clog is the source of the problem.

Otherwise, Call a Plumber!

Any job that requires you to work with piping, replace valves, addon fixtures, or get rid of the significant blockage in the drain requires the help of a plumber. Trust us—you don’t want to make the issue any worse. We’ve seen many DIY plumbing repairs go wrong, leading to overflowing toilets, broken pipes, flooding homes, or bigger clogs than the lines started with. Count on a plumber who has done this for many years instead!
