4 Tips For Preparing Your Plumbing For El Niño

The weather may be warming up, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t storms to come. El Niño is expected to continue making its mark across the state in the coming months, and one of the areas it can affect your home is your plumbing system. A flooded home and burst pipes become possible as storms get severe. But follow our tips and your home can be better prepared for this year’s El Niño.

1: Consider a Plumbing Inspection

A plumbing inspection can help you to determine whether there are any severe problems with your plumbing system that should be addressed ASAP. Knowing whether a pipe needs replacement means you can schedule service soon, rather than waiting for a burst pipe to surprise you during a rainstorm.

2: Check Your Sump Pump (Or Install One)

A sump pump moves water out of the lowest part of your property and is particularly important if your property has a high water table, or if you have experienced flooding in the past. Pour some water into the sump to ensure it is operating properly, or contact a local plumber if you’re interested in installing one.

3: Clean the Gutters

The gutters and downspouts around your property could allow water to back up to your home if they are filled with leaves and other debris. Checking and cleaning the gutters now can save you a lot of worry later on.

4: Check Your Drainage

Finally, it’s important to check your drainage and make sure that water is moving away from your property. You can use a garden hose to do this (but don’t waste too much water!). If you’ve done any renovations on the property lately, it’s possible that you’ll experience problems with drainage, and you may need to prepare further with sandbags to direct water away from your home.
