Signs You Need A Water Purification System

Depending on the area you live in, the quality of water flowing into your home could be as good as bottled water or barely drinkable. You’re probably pretty aware of the quality of your tap water as it relates to your health, but do you know the effects that your water is having on your home’s plumbing? Hard water can have a seriously detrimental effect on the health of your pipes, causing losses in water pressure and even complete blockages. Let’s take a look at some of the ways that you can identify that you have a hard water problem, and what you can do about it.

Hard Water and Its Effects

Hard water is characterized by a high mineral content, and is common in areas throughout the mid and southwestern U.S. Though many cities filter harmful chemicals and minerals out of the water before sending it to homes, a lot of the minerals in hard water are able to slip through the filtration process. These minerals are not harmful to drink, for the most part. However, they do have a very harmful effect on the home’s plumbing.

As hard water flows through your home, it deposits small amounts of minerals on the walls of the pipe. Over time, these deposits build up to the point where they can restrict or block the flow of water through the pipe. Deposits that have progressed to this point are called “lime scale.” Lime scale can cause quite a bit of damage to your home’s plumbing, and pipes with sufficiently advanced lime scale may need to be replaced.

So, how can you tell if you have a hard water problem? One way is to pay attention to your water pressure. A gradual decrease in water pressure is a sign of lime scale buildup in your pipes. Another way is to watch for white calcium buildup around your faucets and shower heads. This chalky substance is a very clear indication of hard water.

Water Purification

Water purification systems are filters designed to remove the extra mineral content from water before it reaches you. There are localized variants, which only serve one faucet, but if you have a hard water problem it’s going to affect the entire house. For that reason, it’s probably a better idea to install a whole-house variant. Whole-house water purifiers are installed in the home’s water line, allowing them to filter all water flowing into the plumbing. This is a great way to protect your entire plumbing system from the deleterious effects of hard water.
